UV Blocking Contact Lenses

Eye doctors constantly remind us to wear sunglasses. Prolonged exposure to bright sunlight causes cataracts. They remind us with each visit. I was surprised to notice that my daughter's contact lenses were labeled "UV Blocking." I checked my own lenses, a different brand, and they had no such indication. Further research confirmed that some contact lenses are UV Blocking, and some are not.

Next visit to the ophthalmologist, I asked them to change my brand to one with UV Blocking. He had no idea that some lenses have it and some don't. They make such a point of insisting on sun glasses, and then they don't even know this important detail about contact lenses. He left the room to discuss with the optometrist, apparently learned something he should have known all along, and then was happy to change my prescription.

Now whenever I am out playing soccer or whatever, I feel better that less UV is making it to my corneas. I wonder if it will make a difference.
